Take me back to the blog

This week we were delighted to roll out NunUnFed, delivering cooked meals to vulnerable people in our communities. Three of our volunteers - Anne Hargreaves, Paddy Holt and Andy Burnett, coordinated an army of cooks and drivers to provide meals to those in need.

We've all seen the headlines about the pressures on the food retailers as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the crisis has also resulted in
extremely trying circumstances for food banks.  Large numbers of people have also been advised against leaving the homes even to shop for basics, due to being considered ‘high-risk’; consequently food banks are receiving less donations and those who would normally access them can’t get to them. This is a key area of concern for Nunhead Knocks; everyone should have access to food, irrespective of their circumstances.

In response, we decided to set up NunUnFed, to provide local people with food parcels and hot meals.

Easy access cooked meals

When asking for help through the website or over the phone, requesters have the option to request helps getting meals.  So far, we have found that most people are perfectly happy to have their shopping delivered to their home, however there are people who for one reason or another are not able to cook for themselves.
Our wonderful matching team, brought these cases to our attention, at which point a team of volunteers from various parts of the hospitality and catering industries cooked up tasty, nutritional meals that were dropped at the requesters’ doors by our fleet of volunteer delivery drivers! This week we cooked forty meals, and we’ve got seventy planned next week.

Lifting spirits

Among the feedback, recipients said said how nice it was to have a treat, and having a delicious meal has really lifted their spirits, and made them feel genuinely supported. We are now in position to expand the service, so please do mention it to anyone you think would benefit from it

A Community Collaboration

Thanks to The Green, for allowing us to use their wonderful space as a centre-point for donations, and The Salvation Army for sharing their kitchen and supplies with us. And of course, special thanks to everyone who has volunteered their time so generously.
