Thank you to each and every person who has put their time and money towards raising funds for Nunhead Knocks and helping to support our neighbours!
When Nunhead Knocks first started, we were managing our donations through DonorBox and PayPal. By late April, we’d already raised over £5,000, and so we made the move to Open Collective - as many Mutual Aid Groups did at that time - in order to make collecting and spending money much more transparent. Open Collective allows everyone who uses it to see where money comes from and where it goes. For Nunhead Knocks, this means the community can see what is being paid for with their donations; allows people to support groups, projects or initiatives, such as NunUnFed; and enables us to run specific fundraising campaigns, such as Ian and May’s Everest Challenge!
Since then, we’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of our neighbourhood, who together have donated an incredible £9,000 to Nunhead Knocks (with grants, this means we’ve raised nearly £11,000). There have been so many incredibly generous donations, and every pound has made a real difference, so we wanted to share with you some of the ways we’ve been able to help the community thanks to your support.
How we’ve been putting your donations to work
Food and other essentials: Making sure individuals and families that need support during the Covid-19 pandemic get access to food and other essential items is why we’re here! Whether it's money, food or nappies, your donations have meant we have been able to put nearly £3,000 towards reaching people in our community and providing them with meals, food, fuel and other essential support.
NunUnFed programme: Your donations have enabled us to put over £800 towards buying ingredients for our food donation and hot meal delivery service, NunUnFed. Through NunUnFed, we’ve been able to deliver over 1,100 hot meals to those in need, as well as providing food parcels to Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers, Age UK Southwark and Senior Social. A big thank you also goes out to all of you who have donated food items, which we always use for meals where we can.
Local community groups: We’ve been supporting local community groups with deliveries of much-needed bulk food supplies for their families that might need a little extra support. This has included Westminster House Youth Club, who we’ve donated over £1,500 to help with bulk food shops for their network.
Outreach: Over £1,000 has been spent on paying for leaflets, posters and flyers to help us get the word out about how Nunhead Knocks can help the community. This outreach has been invaluable in helping us reach those who do not have access to the internet, and would otherwise not know about us.
Utilities: Making sure people have access to basic amenities at this time is really important, and we’ve put nearly £150 towards buying emergency gas and electricity top up for people’s homes using pay-as-you-go keycards.
How you can continue to help the local community
As we wrap up the third month of lockdown, restrictions are slowly loosening, but there are still lots of people out there who will continue to need our support during the weeks and months ahead. Nunhead Knocks will be continuing to help our community for as long as that support is needed, and there are SO many ways you can help us donate or raise funds to make sure that our neighbours continue to get the support that they need.
Sponsor a regular food shop: Just £35 will pay for a week's worth of food and household shopping for a family of 2-3 who can’t afford to pay for these right now.
Donate to NunUnFed: Help us fund NunUnFed and get meals to those without kitchen equipment, key workers and our most vulnerable or at risk neighbours.
Set up your own fundraising initiative: Whether it’s scaling your stairs, hosting a virtual pub quiz, or taking on an isolation challenge, if you have an idea for raising funds for Nunhead Knocks, we’d love to hear it! Here are some ideas to get you started.

Finally, a big shout out goes to all our lovely contributors - we couldn’t have done it without you.
