Take me back to the blog

A group from the community is assembling volunteers to contribute their expertise and help people in the area find jobs – anything from sharing a link to a job listing to helping with a CV.

It hardly needs saying at this point, but COVID-19 has thrown everyone’s lives into disarray. While some have been able to switch seamlessly to working from home, lockdown for many has meant reduced hours, disrupted work schedules and job losses.

One study has estimated that nearly a quarter of all UK jobs are at risk, and with the government’s furlough scheme currently set to end in October, there is still a long period of uncertainty ahead.

However, there are still plenty of reasons to be cheerful. In particular, the outpouring of support over the past few months has made it clear that this community is full of people who are able and willing to help others out.

It’s also clear that there is a wealth of skills and experience in this area. We thought it would be great to set up a system by which, those who are keen, could help their neighbours find jobs by sharing their expertise.

In practice, this could range from relatively low-commitment actions like sharing useful resources or links to job adverts, to helping someone write a sector-specific CV or advising them on interview preparation. As we are all aware, some professions can be difficult to break into at the best of times, and it is often helpful to get advice from those in the know.

Employment is always a vital issue, and given the current circumstances. there are bound to be many people looking for work in the coming weeks and months. We hope that if enough people are interested, we can link up with local organisations working in this area and help build more connections between people in our community.
